Jacobs win UK gas storage contract

Jacobs has received a contract from Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) for the construction of six underground gas storage caverns at Aldbrough in North Yorkshire. SSE officials estimate the value of the project at USD 225 million. Jacobs’s Glasgow office will serve as programme manager for the project, performing all process engineering requirements and supporting the selection and control of specialist contractors for the execution, commissioning, and completion of the works. The six-year programme involves coastal works for seawater inlets/outlets, subsurface drilling and leaching of caverns, engineering and installation of an above-ground centralised gas process facility, and construction of a five-mile pipeline linking the facility to the national transmission system. The caverns, which will be approximately one mile underground, accommodate the offline storage of natural gas to meet peak demand fluctuations.
