An alliance of three British and Japanese companies have won a USD 2.2 billion contract for the construction of a power generation and water desalination plant in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority has selected UK International Bar of Britain and Japanese Mitsui and Tokyo Power Generation companies for the project, with TotalFinaElf of France being excluded in the final phase of competition. A local Arabic newspaper quoted informed sources as saying that the tender contract would be signed by mid-March. The project is anticipated to be completed by mid-2005 and would be ready for operation in the summer of 2006. The new plant will be built in Umm al-Nar, a few kilometres off the Abu Dhabi city and will raise the output of the present plant by 1000 megawatt and 62.5 million gallons of desalinated water per day.
