Indian stainless producers keen on added intake

Indian stainless steel manufacturers are unhappy with the quantum of domestic consumption and they are keen that its intake and distribution levels reach the levels in the West, a leading business daily has reported. The country produced 750,000 tonne stainless steel last year while the global production was 19 million tonne. Catering equipment consumes 76% of the domestic production, while the figure is about half of this in the Western world. The percentage for construction, transportation and process industries is 0.8, 1.2 and 11 respectively in the country, and 11.6, 14.9 and 19.4 per cent in the West. This is what is worrying the members of the Indian Stainless Steel Development Association.
The association is organising its one-in-four-years international conference for the second time from 5–6 December in Mumbai. Association president Nirmal Mathur says the focus will be promoting its use in applications hitherto not so popular. This is hoped to be achieved by creating greater awareness amongst specific end-user industries and providing tech support and advice.
