Stainless steel melt-shop

SMS Demag AG, Germany, have successfully commissioned another melt-shop for the production of stainless steel at the Chinese SBGC Shanghai No. 1 Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. The unit was started two months ahead of schedule. SMS Demag’s scope of supply included the engineering, supply of core components, supervision of fabrication at the local fabricators, automation system and supervision of erection and commissioning. The process line includes a 120-t electric arc furnace, 135-t AOD converter as well as a 135-t ladle furnace. The first cast on the downstream SMS Demag-supplied continuous caster had already taken place a few weeks before. The whole melt-shop’s annual capacity will be 720,000 t of slabs. The sophisticated stainless-steel grades now produced by the new Melt-shop include, for example, grades AISE 201, AISE 304, AISE 316 (austenite) as well as steel grade AISE 430 as (ferritic grade).
