BASF Pharmachemikalien GmbH, Minden, Germany, a BASF Group company, plans to increase its annual capacity for Pseudoephedrine from 750 metric tons to 1000 metric tons. This capacity expansion will meet an ongoing rise in customer demand, which increased significantly over the past year after the competitive substance Phenylpropanolamine had been withdrawn from the market. Pseudoephedrine has been used for many years as a decongestant for the treatment of coughs and colds. Over the past 10 years, the substance has also been increasingly used in combination with antihistamines to treat hay fever and other common allergies. The plant in Minden began producing Pseudoephedrine in the 1950s and is now the world’s largest production facility for this substance. Over the years, the plant has been continuously modified to meet increasing market standards. The longstanding experience in fermentation processes in Minden form the basis of this product.
