The US-Kazakh Tengizchevroil oil-extracting joint venture, which is developing the major Tengiz oilfield in the western Atyrau Region, Kazakhstan, will commission two industrial facilities to produce 2800 tonnes of granulated sulphur a day by the end of 2002. The company has said that the first facility will produce 2200 tonnes of the high-quality prilled sulphur a day. The second facility, to make sulphur flakes, is a joint project by Tengizchevroil and the Canadian Enersul company. The construction of this facility, which will produce 600 tonnes of sulphur a day, is to be completed in the second half of 2002. The company noted that the commissioning of these two facilities, for which the company allocated USD 42 million last year, would allow the company to export up to 75% of its total sulphur output. The joint venture also said that it was at an early stage of working on another project to increase production capacity. One stage of this project involves pumping almost all the concomitant gas extracted by Tengizchevroil (2bn-3bn cu.m. a year) back into the Tengiz collector, which will cut the amount of gas flared off by 95 per cent. In addition, this project envisages building a second-generation plant, to be completed in 2005, to increase the company’s total production capacity of marketable oil by 7million tonnes a year.
